I always have fun on a portrait shoot. As a portrait photographer, I always allow time to get to know my subjects before I pick up the camera. Those minutes spent chatting and getting to know the person a little bit makes all the difference in how the session progresses. They are more relaxed, realize that the camera is not their enemy and enjoy their time ‘in the spotlight’.
It’s a question of trust. The subject has to trust me to take a creative image showing not just what they look like, but who they are – their style, their bearing, and their personality.
Photography is a medium of windows and mirrors – it reflects what we are, and gives a window into who we are.
